WHALE SHARK

Whale shark

The magnificent giant whale shark is the world's largest shark and also the largest living fish species on Earth. This peaceful animal eats mainly plankton but also small fish. In the oceans where we can find whale sharks in flocks, it indicates that the ecosystem is in balance. If there is plenty of plankton, you may be lucky enough to see a large group of whale sharks. Otherwise, this enormous and peaceful giant usually lives alone. solitary life.

Each whale shark has a unique pattern of yellow-white spots and stripes along its body, almost like a fingerprint. This allows researchers and divers around the world to identify and track individual individuals over long periods of time. Using photo identification, databases have been built that give us more knowledge about these fascinating giants.

The whale shark is the world's largest fish species and can rarely grow to nearly 20 meters long, although most of them seen today are between 5 and 12 meters. They can weigh as much as 36 tons – the equivalent of a small bus. Despite their enormous size, the whale shark is known for its calm and quiet behavior, which has made them a favorite among snorkelers and divers. Their lifespan is also impressive. Research shows that they can live between 60 and 150 years, but much about their life cycle is still a mystery.

The most striking feature of a whale shark is of course its enormous mouth, which can grow up to 1,5 meters wide. Despite this, it does not pose a threat to humans – quite the opposite. The whale shark is a filter feeder and feeds mainly on plankton, small fish and other microscopic organisms. It swims slowly with its mouth open, filtering the water through its gills and catching what little remains. It is an efficient and quiet way of eating that reminds us of how different life can be below the surface.

Seeing a whale shark in the wild is for many one of the greatest experiences in the world of diving. It combines the grandeur – its size and power – with an unexpected gentleness, leaving a memory that lingers long after the encounter.
