Diving & snorkeling on Mafia Island
The diving around Mafia Island is considered to be among the best in Tanzania and is characterised by calm conditions, healthy coral reefs and great biodiversity. The area is protected, which has contributed to well-preserved reefs and a rich marine life. The diving is suitable for both newer and more experienced divers and takes place at a relaxed pace, often with small groups and plenty of time at each dive site.
Below the surface you will find colorful corals, schools of tropical fish, turtles and stingrays. Visibility is often good and the variety is great, from shallow reefs to slightly deeper areas. The snorkeling is also very good and can often be experienced directly next to the resort or via short boat trips.
One of the highlights of Mafia Island is the opportunity to snorkel with whale sharks during the season. These encounters take place under controlled and respectful conditions and are considered one of the Indian Ocean's most spectacular natural experiences.
