A WEEK IN COZUMEL

What has made Cozumel world-famous above all is drift diving. The smooth and predictable currents allow divers to be carried along the reefs without having to actively swim. The experience is often described as flying underwater, where you calmly glide past large coral formations, sponges and schools of fish. Drift diving provides longer bottom times, lower air consumption and a very relaxed dive that is suitable for both newly certified and experienced divers.

Visibility when diving in Cozumel is often between 25 and 40 meters, sometimes even better, making it easy to orient yourself and enjoy the full scale of the reef. The water temperature is normally between 26 and 29 degrees all year round, which means comfortable diving without the need for thick wetsuits. Diving is almost always done from a boat and usually as a two-person dive, with short boat trips out to the dive sites.

The marine life in Cozumel is both rich and varied. During the dives it is common to encounter sea turtles, eagle rays and nurse sharks, as well as moray eels, groupers and large schools of tropical fish. Cozumel is also home to the endemic Splendid Toadfish, a rare and distinctive species that is only found here and that many divers have high on their wish list. Thanks to the protection of the national park, the reefs are generally very healthy, which is noticeable both in the condition of the corals and the abundance of marine life.
