Bahamas

The Bahamas are perfect for a liveaboard with its marine life, and many islands. The country has more than 3,000 islands, cays and islets in the Atlantic Ocean east of the Florida Keys. The capital and largest city is Nassau on the island of New Providence. The islands are low and flat, with ridges that usually do not rise more than 15 to 20 meters above sea level. The highest point in the country is Mount Alvernia (formerly Como Hill) on Cat Island at only 64 meters. There are several so-called blue holes here and they attract divers and free divers. Dean's Blue Hole, located near Long Island in the Bahamas, is the deepest blue hole in the world. It plunges to a depth of 202 meters.

The Bahamas had a reputation in the late 1600th and early 1700th centuries as the “pirate republic.” Pirates like Blackbeard and Calico Jack used Nassau as their base to plunder ships across the Caribbean.

Harbour Island is part of the Out Islands and is known for its pink sand beaches. The pink hue comes from tiny coral organisms called foraminifera. Because of its pink sand, Pink Sands Beach is the most photographed beach in the entire region. Big Major Cay is known for its swimming pigs. This uninhabited island is located in the Exumas and is known as Pig Beach.

When is the best time to go to the Bahamas?

The best time to dive in the Bahamas is usually during the dry season. This is when you will have stable weather, excellent visibility and close encounters with large animals such as hammerhead sharks and tiger sharks. Although diving is possible year-round, the wet season brings warmer waters but also a greater risk of tropical storms and potentially reduced visibility. It also brings fewer tourists and often a rich reef life.

o Dry season, late November – April
o Transition months, May and November
o Rainy season, May – October

What can I see when I dive in the Bahamas?

The Bahamas is primarily known for its sharks. Here you have perhaps the world's most intense encounters with different species of shark. Tiger Beach and Bimini have made themselves known for close contact with mainly tiger sharks and great hammerhead sharks, but here you also see many other species. Lemon sharks, Caribbean reef sharks, nurse sharks, sometimes even bull sharks are common. They often come in very large numbers, up to your knees. It is chumming that applies here and typical diving should perhaps be described more as an experience. You sit on the sandy bottom at shallow depths and are surrounded by dozens of sharks. There are also more classic liveaboards where you often see sharks and experience coral reefs and marine life, as well as some wrecks.

The two “James Bond wrecks” in the Bahamas are the Tears of Allah, a cargo ship from Never Say Never Again. The other is a replica of a Vulcan Bomber from the movie Thunderball. The wrecks are located close to each other off New Providence Island. Both were deliberately sunk for filming and are now artificial reefs that attract divers who want to experience film history and also marine life. For those who want to snorkel with dolphins, there are dedicated tours focused on just that, but they often run during the rainy and hurricane season, which can affect tours.

Where is the best diving in the Bahamas?

The best diving in the Bahamas depends on your interests, with Andros Island ideal for blue hole and wall diving. Grand Bahama for shark diving, especially at Tiger Beach, and then Bimini for great hammerhead sharks. Other good spots include Eleuthera for drift and wreck diving, and Nassau for a variety of wreck and reef dives.
Tiger Beach and Bimini are the most popular destinations and are very seasonal for the best experiences. Book well in advance, at least ten months in advance or more if you want to go there.
