Blackbird Caye Resort

Blackbird Caye Resort

Blackbird Caye Resort in Belize is a lovely little resort that offers wonderful relaxation. Here you are out at the world's second largest barrier reef, the Belize Barrier Reef Reserve System. The reef is a continuous system consisting of seven marine protected areas along the barrier reef, protected lagoons and offshore atolls. The Belize Barrier Reef Reserve System was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1996.

It is the largest barrier reef in the Northern Hemisphere and represents all important reef and coastal habitats. Also rare coastal forests on sandbanks that are home to endangered flora and fauna.

The resort offers good accommodation with all inclusive where you get international flavors and dishes with a local touch. Food includes freshly caught seafood and produce from Belize in every breakfast, lunch and dinner. If you get hungry between meals, you can head to the water. The two tropical bars serve snacks and drinks.

The resort offers a total of only 17 rooms in four different styles.andards. All rooms are located directly on the sea and have a lovely view out over the sea at Turneffe Island. Here you can enjoy peace and quiet with nice snorkeling and diving directly on the beach or at any of the dive sites that you reach during your day trips.

There is also a swimming pool for relaxation. Although it is remote, free internet is available in the large spacious lounge in the center of the resort.

Land-based diving

Land-based diving in Belize offers some of the Caribbean's best diving. With its long barrier reef and outer islands combined with relatively few tourists, this is a truly unique destination. The Blue hole is an almost iconic dive site that is mentioned in most lists when talking about the world's best and most famous dive sites. This is probably one of the world's most photographed dive sites from the air.

To get here you have to go out on one live board or live out by the islands as it is otherwise very far to go for a day trip. Belize has a lot more to offer and some of the best places for diving.

Some of the best dive sites are for example Turneffe reef, Glovers reef and Lighthouse reef which are all very good. Along the huge barrier reef along the coast, there are lots of fish and invertebrates. Belize is also known for diving and snorkeling whale shark and even an occasional dugong is possible to see. Here you can also find the spectacular splendid or whitelined toadfish. It is otherwise perhaps best known from Cozumel in Mexico, but where it is rarely seen.

Whale shark season

During the spring in April and May but also March and June, it is very common to see, dive and snorkel with whale sharks. The best chances to see whale sharks are usually from 2 days before the full moon until 10 days after the full moon. As it is relatively easy to plan after this, it is good to book well in advance so that you can come when the chances of seeing them are the greatest.

Regardless, you will get exciting diving and fantastic experiences. The whale sharks come here almost on the clock. They come here in large numbers to take care of the large amounts of plankton and smaller animals and eggs that are found here at that time of year.

In addition to whale sharks, nurse sharks, Caribbean reef sharks, stingrays and large barracudas are regularly seen here. If you're lucky, you can snorkel with dugongs. They often come inshore to graze in the shallow waters out at the outer islands.

Diving in Belize

Blackbird is a 5-star PADI facility and offers diving courses at several different levels. In addition to diving courses, you have access to around 70 different dive sites out at Turneffe reef. The diving center has its own jetty and thanks to boats with plenty of space, it is easy to reach the dive sites. Most are within 35 minutes but some are up to an hour away.

The diving center offers experiences for those who dive as well as those who focus more on snorkeling. World-class dive sites such as the Great Blue Hole, Half Moon Caye Wall and The Aquarium are just 60 minutes away. This trip includes a barbeque on Half Moon Caye. You will then also make a visit to the bird protection area to see the red-footed sole.

The Elbow dive site is also conveniently located just 15 minutes away. This is one of the most popular dive sites in Belize where you usually encounter large pelagic species. On exceptional days, shoals of sometimes more than fifty rays can delight even the most experienced divers. Barracudas, large sea bass and much more are often found here. There is also a brand new dive site "The Witcontrete". It is a 114 meter shipwreck located just 3 minutes from the beach.

In addition to diving and snorkelling, kayaking and bird watching are also offered here and, of course, plenty of time for relaxation and vacations.
