Fall break in Mexico

Diving, cenotes and family adventures

I brought with me family for fall vacation in Mexico, a long-awaited combination of diving and vacation. We started our trip in Playa del Carmen, where we stayed three nights in a small all inclusive-hotel that suited the children perfectly. There we had a few nice days of sun, swimming and rest after the long trip. From Playa del Carmen it is easy to book dives in the cenotes and from November diving with bull sharks is also offered. However, the season had not really taken off started yet, so they the dive had to wait.

The city of Playa del Carmen is large and perhaps not the most charming, but there are nice beaches, many good restaurants and plenty of excursion opportunities for those who want to discover more – everything from Chichen Itza to Isla Women.

Magical days at Cozumel

After our first few days we took a taxi down to the port and jumped on the ferry to Cozumel. There are several departures every day and the journey only takes about 30 minutes – super easy and smooth. Once on the island we took a taxi to the hotel (Inga hotels offer transfers here).

The family continued to enjoy the sun and swimming while I finally got to go diving. During our time there I managed to do four dives with two different dive centers and I must say I was pleasantly surprised.

The reefs were beautiful and relatively healthy. We saw lots of huge crawfish, curious nurse sharks, two eagle rays that have just returned for the season and several specimens of the endemic Splendid Toadfish. Simply amazing dives, and very professional dive center.

One day we rented a jeep and drove around the island. On the west side are all the beaches clubs denser, but it was only on the more untouched east side that we found those nice quiet beaches. We could even see traces of sea turtles that had laid their eggs along the coast there.

Tulum and the unforgettable cenote diving

After four days on Cozumel we took the ferry back and continued south towards Tulum. Here we stayed at a really nice city hotel – perfect because Tulum The town is located a bit away from the beach. The atmosphere was much cozier than in Playa del Carmen, with many local restaurants, from small taco joints to more upscale steakhouses.

The reason for our stop here was the cenotesI booked a full day with a private guide and headed out into the jungle to The Pit and Dos Eyes – two cenotes which are close to each other but offer completely different experiences.

Diving here was like stepping into a whole new world. Even without cave diver certificate you can dive into what is called cavern-zone, where you always have daylight somewhere. The combination of light rays, crystal clear water and the feeling of floating in ancient cave systems makes the experience one of my best diving days ever.

On the last day I took the family to a cenote near Tulum center. Here everyone could snorkel in clear water, swim into the caves and look for small turtles and iguanas – a perfect ending.

The journey home

The days flowed by. away and soon it was time to go home. The transfer back to Cancun took about 1 hour and 45 minutes, and the trip home went smoothly.
