Vanuatu

Vanuatu consists of about 83 relatively small islands. 65 of them are inhabited and only 14 of them are larger than 100 km2. There are about 1,300 kilometers between the northernmost and southernmost islands. Vanuatu's largest cities are the capital, Port Vila, on Efate, and Luganville on Espiritu Santo.

The highest peak in Vanuatu is Mount Tabwemasana, at 1,879 meters. There are several active volcanoes in Vanuatu. Most of the islands are steep, with unstable soils and little permanent freshwater.

Land diving, known in the local Saa language as Gol and in the main Bislama language as Nanggol, is a ritual performed by the men of the southern part of Pentecost Island in Vanuatu. It involves young men jumping from wooden towers that are approximately 20 to 30 meters high. They have non-elastic vines tied around their ankles, and are designed to break off and absorb the impact of the ground, and are done as an offering for a richer harvest. The tradition has developed into a tourist attraction and is considered the prototype for modern bungee jumping.

According to Guinness World Records, the G-force experienced by those at their lowest point during the jump is the largest ever experienced by humans in the non-industrialized world.
